Ybor City
Tampa’s Ybor City was once the “cigar capital of the world” with 12,000 Cuban, Spanish and Italian cigar rollers churning out 700 million cigars a year in the city’s 200 factories. Today the Latin Quarter is a National Historic Landmark District and lively night spot, but cigars are still at the core of Ybor City. Cigar rolling can still be seen by visitors to the Gonzalez Y Martinez cigar factory and the Ybor City State Museum and the finished product can be purchased for $4 - $14 in Ybor’s many cigar shops.
Tampa Bay Beaches
The Tampa Bay region is home to 35 miles of white sand beaches on some 20 barrier islands along the Gulf of Mexico. The 2002 annual beach survey by “Dr. Beach” Stephen Leatherman, a coastal sciences professor at Florida International University, ranked Caladesi Island State Park #5 and Fort DeSoto Park #6 out of 650 beaches surveyed. In addition, Clearwater Beach was named “Top City Beach” in the Gulf region.
